Travel advice
Girton College is located in North-West Cambridge and is set on 50 acres of land. It has a large green space, well maintained gardens and an apple orchard, as well as large pitches and closed courts.
Address:
Girton College, Huntingdon Road
CB3 1AQ.
Travelling by car:
Exit at the A14 at junction 31, taking the 1st left at the roundabout onto Huntingdon road. At the first set of traffic lights, turn left to Girton Road, there is parking in the Visitors Car Park called Mare’s Run. If you need disable parking, please call the Porters’ Lodge (+44 (0)1223338999).
Once parked, please enter via the visitors entrance labelled Old Kitchens Door. It has a ramped entrance and intercom to connect you to the Porters Lodge which you should ring to enter.
Cambridge itself is a busy city, making driving in the centre time consuming. There is a one-way system, areas which are pedestrianised, and often heavy traffic.
Travelling by taxi:
There are taxi ranks at the railway station and in the city centre (opposite the Porters Lodge of Christ’s College on St Andrews Street). Please arrive on Tower Drive and enter via the Porters’ Lodge (door to the left, directly under the tower).
Travelling by train:
If you are travelling into Cambridge by train, there is advice on the link below on the National Rail website which can give you specific guidance.
Travelling by Bus:
The Universal (U) bus runs from Girton College (Girton Corner). University of Cambridge card holders (students and staff) can travel on the U bus for £1.70 per single trip, otherwise the standard fare is £2. Students and staff from any other educational establishment can purchase a ‘purple ticket’, a single costing £1.70 or £2.50 for an all day ticket (you must show your institution ID). Access the Universal timetable and view the new route map.
There are also regular buses from Cambridge city centre to the main College site. Stagecoach Citi 5 and Citi 6 run from Emmanuel Street to Girton Corner.
Bus tickets can be bought from the bus driver; contactless payments are preferred (using a contactless-enabled card or a mobile phone with Apple Pay or Google Pay installed and ready to use) but it is also possible to pay with cash. Pushchairs and fold up bikes only can be taken on the bus. Information on bus services in Cambridge can be found on the website of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
2. Things to do in Central Cambridge
Cambridge is a historic city with centuries of history attached to it. You can explore the dynamic architecture across the city, indulge in international cuisine in Market Square, or you could explore the various colleges that make up the world renowned University of Cambridge.
Punting
Punting is a quintessential Cambridge experience. You can self-hire (which means steering the boat yourself!) or go on a guided tour. When punting along the river Cam, you’ll go along the ‘backs’ and see the beautiful architecture of various colleges, including, Kings, Trinity, St Johns, Magdalene, Clare, Trinity Hall, and Queen’s.
Various companies offer these services, the closest from Girton is Scudamore’s by Magdalene bridge (Quayside Punting Station, Magdalene St, Cambridge CB5 8AB). Alternatively, if you are in town, you could try Cambridge Chauffeur Punts on Silver Street Bridge (Silver St, Cambridge CB3 9EU). Finally, Trinity College offer only self-hire punts (no tours) and on a first come first serve basis for £24/hr for members of the public.
Gelato
Among many odd traditions like gowned formals and singing at graduation celebrations, Cambridge students are known to enjoy some interesting flavours of gelato all year round! Come rain or shine you’ll spot a student at these local favourites.
Jack’s Gelato (6 Bene’t St, Cambridge CB2 3QN)- Jack’s is a classic, with a new menu everyday and vegan options available, Jack’s is the place to be to try some adventurous flavours.
Aromi Gelato (3 Peas Hill, Cambridge CB2 3PP)- Aromi, located just around the corner from Jack’s, Aromi offers delicious gelato and a menu to test your language skills!
Museums & Botanic Garden
The University of Cambridge Museums is a consortium of the 8 museums of the university. Whether your interests are in fine art, dinosaur bones, or the classical world, there’s a museum for you!
There’s also the Cambridge University Botanic Garden which provides a lush green escape from the bustling city environment.
University of Cambridge Colleges
There are 31 Colleges which, along with the various faculties and departments, make up the University of Cambridge.
The oldest college is Peterhouse, founded in 1284 and the youngest is Homerton College, which received its royal charter in 2010 affirming its status as a college of the university.
Each college is a semi-autonomous institution, so have various visitor policies. The link below shows a page intended for alumni, but has the most up to date information on college policies. Please ignore any reference to a CAMcard as these would not apply for conference attendees who are not alumni of the University.
Market Square
Market Square (Market Hill, Cambridge, CB1 0SS) is a staple of the city. Traders have been running stalls there since the Middle Ages. It is open 10am to 4pm every day except Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
There are options to buy a variety of different food dishes from around the world, plants, jewellery, books and more!
